the Evelyn hotel adds some colour

I love this is but am honest enough to admit my ignorance and say that I don"t know what it is - a flower, a bird, an insect? It appeared on the Brunswick St wall of the Evelyn hotel in late December 2008.

breakfast at Gutz on Brunswick St

Gutz cafe is one of the quiet achievers on Brunswick St. It"s not full of cool kids comparing sneakers. Like Alimentari and Sila it attracts a diverse clientele who come for the excellent breakfasts. Every few months I go there because I experience a craving for the menemen, a Turkish scrambled eggs dish with onions, tomatoes and capsicums.

invasion of the franchises

In 2007 I wrote about the arrival of the convenience shop on Brunswick St near Babka. In 2008 Grill"d opened on Kerr St. Now in 2009 a new franchise chain, Spudbar, is opening in the former pizza place next to Joe"s Garage (it used to be Joe"s pizza, then it became Sammy"s pizza, lowered its standards and went out of business) that has been empty for months.

one retarded beer at Bar Open, Brunswick St

On a recent Saturday I walked past Bar Open. Whoever was working behind the bar must have been hungover or something because the purple curtains were drawn and it looked closed. To counter this, a handmade sign stuck in the window indicated they they were open and randomly stated that they had a retarded beer.

dinner at Mon Ami on Nicholson St

Mon Ami is a 16 seat brasserie on the corner of Nicholson St and Moor St on the western edge of Fitzroy. It has a traditional French menu and it specialises in duck. I have been meaning to eat there for a long time, and was treated to a special dinner there last Friday night when my girlfriend made a booking and told me she was taking me out for a surprise dinner. As we began walking in the right direction to go to Mon Ami I became convinced that it was our destination, and I was so pleased when I realised for certain!

Wanted: 4 bedroom house in Northern Suburbs

Hey there Maniacs,

I've just recently relocated to the fantastic city of Melbourne and have now been entrusted with the task of house-hunting for myself and my fellow housemates. I'm posting this on the community in the hopes that somebody here is a lovely landlord or landlady or might know somebody  who is looking for reliable honest tenants....Read Full Article»

Fitzroy history - dinner at the Rochester Castle hotel

This undated photo shows the Rochester Castle hotel on the corner Johnston and George Streets in the late nineteenth century. Unlike many other nineteenth century pubs in Fitzroy, which have been demolished or made into private housing, the Rochester Castle is still a functioning and popular pub.
