I"m a fan of truth in advertising and the Birmingham hotel on the corner of Johnston St and Smith St is making a significant claim here: apparently "it"s not shit anymore!" Does this mean no more white power skinhead bands and bogan retards loitering around? I"ve never been inside because the place looks foul and only seems to entertain the underclass. Is this step 1 in a Builder"s Arms style makeover?
Why do people keep opening shops that are so very tempting in Fitzroy? So many beautiful books... and not enough time for reading. The Searchers has been around for quite a while now and I hope they continue to survive.

On Sunday 10 August I went to one of the free events on the 2008 Stencil Festival program - a walking tour of various street art sites in Melbourne led by Fitzroy Library"s Amanda and well known local artist Deb. The event was worth attending because the participants learned a lot from Deb about how street artists do their work.

Smith St now has another local shop for local people selling precious things! A new branch of Memorabilia on Parade (it is related to the shop of the same name in Clifton Hill) has opened near the Smith St bazaar.
On Sunday I had a lamb gyros for lunch at the Sossa deli / cafe on Brunswick St, otherwise known as "The Real Greek Souvlaki". Indie music and film retailer Title have a brilliant selection of media to browse through on Gertrude St. I made it out without buying something this time (only because I wanted to check them out but was in a hurry) - I am sure it will not be possible next time. An excellent and detailed review of Title and its business model has been written by City of Sound. I"ve not been to the Sydney shop and I am glad they have chosen to expand to Fitzroy!
I agree with this Argyle St commenter completely. I am so sick of whinging pathetic junkies and having to deal with petty crime on the streets of Fitzroy. But I also love living here. There are no simple answers...
Beautiful bread and the most divine pizza is baked and sold daily at this bakery on Gertrude St. The potato and olive pizza, with lots of crunchy salt on top, is possibly the best take-away lunch in Fitzroy....Read Full article»

I got my hair cut at Dr Follicles today, and had a coffee from Birdman Eating, which I have earlier written about.ÃÂ The Bird Man has got his liquor licence up and running nicely, and has a drinks and tapas thing happening of an evening - though he was kind of distancing himself from the "tapas" concept (despite the menu saying "Evening Tapas") in favour of the small meals to share concept. You can have green beans for $7.50, zucchini and fetta fritters for $8, grilled ox tongue with beetroot, capers and horseradish for $11.50, shanks for $14.50, crispy duck for $16.50 or go the hack with a sliced hunk of steak covered with a piquant salsa for $28.50.
