my anonymous internet stalker is a coward and a criminal

I am being stalked by someone anonymously on the internet. They regularly post insulting and offensive comments to Fitzroyalty (which I don"t publish). Someone is also writing posts on the anti-Fitzroyalty blog that reference posts from Fitzroyalty in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to annoy me. Although I cannot yet prove it, it is plausible to think that the comments and the posts are written by the same person. There is evidence of a particular voice and style of writing that is common to both.

The anti-Fitzroyalty blog attempts satire but achieves only banal and bitter mimicry. Many of its posts would have no meaning to the general reader, who would not see the connections between the mimicry ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

What:

if you want your comment published, make it worth reading

I recently received this messge via Facespace:

I"ve notice that you only publish responses to your articles in your Fitzroyalty blogs that agree with your opinion. Being someone who did take an interest in your blogs. I feel my interest is waning having just had a response of my own ignored/not published. Just to add I feel any news or reviews that don"t show a true sample of responses from their readers lacks credibility....Read Full Article»

imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery

I am curious about the future of media and am exploring this by participating in it, by publishing a hyperlocal news sites and involving myself in online communities. I"ve tried to create something new and unique with Fitzroyalty and the ongoing interest in it suggests that people find it useful and entertaining. I find it rewarding to publish my site, and I appreciate all the feedback I receive and all the friends and contacts I have made in the Melbourne social media / citizen journalism scene.

I"m not trying to build a commercial business that has a brand to market and protect, but I do take my reputation seriously. I monitor the net for discussions about my site and respond to ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

why am I surrounded by frickin? idiots? Fitzroyalty vs City of Yarra – food hygiene FOI battle round six

In my last post of this series documenting my attempts to get the City of Yarra to release the information it gathers about food hygiene inspections in Fitzroy into the public domain, I suggested that I had exhausted all my options.

I was waiting for the office of the Ombudsman to complete its investigation of the City of Yarra"s use of the "substantially and unreasonably diverting Council Resources" excuse to refuse to provide me with the details of the inspections. The Ombudsman thinks this job is done but they have failed....Read Full Article»

Victorian local and state governments cannot be trusted on food hygiene

With all the publicity received by the NSW government for delivering food hygiene transparency to its residents, the Victorian government in its usual way is promising to deliver an insipid inferior version and hopes that the residents of Victoria don"t notice. A name and shame food hygiene site will be set up by the Victorian government next year, but it will only publish information already in the public domain â the details of restaurants who have breached hygiene regulations repeatedly and badly enough to be taken to court.

What we will get in Victoria is based on the WA model. This is pathetic and completely inadequate. In NSW people get access to information about even minor breaches that result .

Fitzroyalty vs City of Yarra – food hygiene FOI battle round five

A lot has happened in the last month in relation to my battle to get the City of Yarra to release the information it gathers about food hygiene inspections in Fitzroy to the public. I think I"ve done almost everything I can do. Although it may still be possible to force this information into the public domain, I doubt that I have the time or resources to continue the fight. Instead of trying to do everything myself, I plan to enlist support from other individuals and from consumer groups.

the City of Yarra?s new customer service guarantee

On 29 July the City of Yarra published a press release explaining its new customer service guarantee. It contains many new promises relating to improved service delivery to Yarra residents. Apart from making no mention of its prior promise to build more public toilets, which I think is a fundamental issue for visitors to Yarra"s shopping strips, the guarantee acknowledges many of the issues I have raised here. I"m not claiming responsibility or credit for most of these, as I believe many are based on complaints from many constituents.

For example, they state "We will respond to your email with an acknowledgement within 1 working day." I"ve previously waited 3 or 4 days for a response, and ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

the power of personality in social media engagement

I am regularly criticised by readers like Betty and Louisa being overly critical or confrontational in my attitude and opinions. Some readers don"t like my ideas, though usually they have not bothered to read the discussion or fail to comprehend the real issue before they launch into an incoherent response. Some of my topics are arcane and my point of view is not shared by many people. So be it.

A number of my friends have expressed concern and discomfort about the mismatch between my real personality and the persona I project as the author and publisher of Fitzroyalty. They don"t understand why I do this, why I would want to do it, or what purpose it serves....Read Full Article»

Fitzroyalty on the curriculum

I"ve been surprised and pleased to find that some publishing and media students have been interested in analysing Fitzroyalty as an example of citizen journalism and hyperlocal media.

In May 2009 I was interviewed by RMIT student Susan about the role of citizen journalists in creating local media....Read Full Article»

another Melbourne content thief

Update 16 July 2009: Jessi has emailed me to apologise and I have responded thanking her and accepting her apology.

I"m getting bored with chasing down all the people who steal my content. Melbourne blogger Jess took my photo of Dexter"s and used it in her May 2009 post without the attribution and link to the original required by my Creative Commons licence. In June I posted a comment asking her to remove the image or add the attribution and link. She has not done so, has not emailed me back or even responded to the link. I tried to be nice and asked her to do the right thing and got nowhere had to make more noise about the issue to resolve it. Jess, you"re a content thief....Read Full Article»
