Here"s further evidence that the standards of enforcement, disclosure and transparency regarding food hygiene standards in Victoria are hopelessly inadequate and out of date. In London, local government authorities close down suspect businesses and refuse to allow owners to reopen under different names. They post information on the windows of premises for the public to see. This business was the Saffron cafe (11A Sicilian Avenue, Holborn) and I saw this by coincidence. Why can"t we have this in Melbourne? We could if our inept, obsessed with secrecy, state government developed some political will and forced local governments to take their responsibilities in relation to public health seriously.

the City of Yarra?s arts and cultural strategy 2010 ? 2014
The City of Yarra is developing its arts plans for the next five years. You can read more here. You have until 5 March 2010 to complete and return surveys aimed at community members, arts organisations and arts practitioners. If you have something to say about the arts in the City of Yarra, the time is now.

at last, Fitzroy is promised a new public toilet
The City of Yarra is clueless when it comes to spending our money. It wastes thousands of dollars to pay business lobby groups and historical societies to build shit websites, but fails to meet its promises to build public toilets.
Instead it comes up with ridiculous plans to outsource the provision of public toilet facilities to private businesses. It"s curious that we have heard nothing further about this. I suspect, as I predicted, that it has been a complete failure....Read Full Article»
a new community garden for Fitzroy?
A year ago I wrote a post about the vacant land on the corner of George and Charles streets. Now the City of Yarra has announced that the site may become a new community garden. As the land is apparently owned by the Department of Human Services, permission from the government will be required. I think it"s a great idea. What do you think?

a review of Melbourne local government websites
In recent months I"ve written critiques of a series of different websites, including traders" associations, local guides and more local guides. This post will examine and compare the 8 local government sites (listed below) that cover approximately the same geography as the 10 local news sites I publish for inner city Melbourne.
Councils deliver many essential services to ratepayers and local residents, such as building roads and operating libraries, but they don"t identify the delivery of news and information as an essential community service or devote adequate attention to it. Their sites are usually poorly designed and irregularly updated and are not designed with users" needs in mind. In a fascinating recent case, the city of ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

serious problems with some of Fitzroy?s bakeries
Fitzroy (note that North Fitzroy is considered a separate area in this data) has seven bakeries (that is, premises where baking occurs, not necessarily where baked goods are sold to the public). They are:
I have recently received the details for all the hygiene inspections carried out on Fitzroy food service businesses, and I posted some of the common reasons for failing an inspection last week. Because the names of ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

Fitzroyalty vs City of Yarra â food hygiene FOI battle round eight
A month ago I reported that the City of Yarra finally promised to send me the details of its hygiene inspections for food service businesses in Fitzroy. I now have the spreadsheet and am preparing some posts based on the data it contains. To begin with, I"d like to simply list some of the infringements that cause businesses to be non-compliant and to fail the inspections.

Fitzroy history ? complaining about local government
At the moment Fitzroy was formally defined as a municipality in September 1858, residents were already complaining about the Council. This letter to the editor of The Argus, Wednesday 29 September, 1858, p5, complains that most of the prospective councillors are "totally unfit to undertake duties". Some of us are saying the same thing now, particularly the way party political hacks use a term in local government as a stepping stone to greater power in state parliament.
As the Hume Leader reported in May 2009:...Read Full Article»
the future of 239 Brunswick St
The future of 239 Brunswick St is in doubt. Former tenant Thomas Gannan furniture moved out in September and went to new premises across the road (where Audiolifestyle used to be) and will reopen in October. Public comment closes on Monday 5 October 2009 on a proposal from the City of Yarra to lease the land at 239 Brunswick St (notice, 20kb PDF) to Yarra Community Housing for 40 years. Yarra Community Housing plans to demolish the existing building and build a 4 storey apartment building on the site to provide affordable rental accommodation, with a shop at the front on the ground level.
