my anonymous internet stalker is a coward and a criminal

I am being stalked by someone anonymously on the internet. They regularly post insulting and offensive comments to Fitzroyalty (which I don"t publish). Someone is also writing posts on the anti-Fitzroyalty blog that reference posts from Fitzroyalty in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to annoy me. Although I cannot yet prove it, it is plausible to think that the comments and the posts are written by the same person. There is evidence of a particular voice and style of writing that is common to both.

The anti-Fitzroyalty blog attempts satire but achieves only banal and bitter mimicry. Many of its posts would have no meaning to the general reader, who would not see the connections between the mimicry ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

What:

if you want your comment published, make it worth reading

I recently received this messge via Facespace:

I"ve notice that you only publish responses to your articles in your Fitzroyalty blogs that agree with your opinion. Being someone who did take an interest in your blogs. I feel my interest is waning having just had a response of my own ignored/not published. Just to add I feel any news or reviews that don"t show a true sample of responses from their readers lacks credibility....Read Full Article»

Melbourne bloggers ? is Fwix exploiting your content?

I received an email yesterday from someone called Jason from a commercial local news aggregator site called Fwix, which is based in San Francisco. This alerted me to the fact that content from Fitzroyalty was about to be exploited by Fwix in breach of my non-commercial creative commons copyright license.

Abby Winters and other unethical employers

I have to interrupt my series of summer holiday reviews to discuss some breaking news. The Fitzroy based Abby Winters porn site is in trouble again. The bogan press journalist, who has been pursuing a vendetta against it since 2007, reported yesterday that G Media CEO Garion Hall has been charged with numerous offences including "making objectionable films for gain". For the background to this story read my December 2007 and June 2009 posts.

The charges are the result of investigations following his June arrest. A number of people writing about this issue then analysed the law and came to the conclusion that while it may be legal for Abby Winters to publish its content on the internet ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

Mess and Noise is a content thief

By chance I discovered one of my images being used without my consent on a Mess and Noise forum (update: as of 27 December 2009 this forum topic has been removed). It had been taken from my review of Court Jester cafe in Brunswick. I posted a comment in the forum asking for it to be removed or for the source it was taken from (if not my site) could be identified.

The person who posted it responded by indicating that the trail led to a Gumtree advertisement for warehouse space to rent in the building housing Court Jester. I emailed both Mess and Noise and Gumtree explaining that the image was used without my permission in violation of ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

The only bad thing about the popularity of cycling is the popularity of theft and vandalism of bikes. Every time I see a bicycle skeleton I imagine an unhappy person having to walk home...

What:

common sense, discrimination and human rights

We live in an age of rampant hypocrisy. Rich suits in their private old man clubs receive exemptions from anti-discrimination laws and are free to exclude women, but a woman who wants to run a travel business that excludes men from group trips is banned from doing so. Some forms of sexism are apparently better than others.

In the aftermath of the terrible death of Dianne Brimble, cruise ship operators are trying to be more socially responsible and want to end the bogan drug fueled gang bang culture that seems to prevail amongst some of their customers. But when they try to stop schoolies from booking trips because they are a liability due to their stupid drunken ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

why I blocked you on Twitter

Why did I block you on Twitter? Let me count the ways. Maybe because I focus on hyperlocal news in inner city Melbourne, Australia and you"re a gym junkie from Milwaukie, USA. I don"t care what you (allegedly) think. Maybe you are a life coach from outer suburbia. I don"t want you listed in my followers – it makes me look bad. Perhaps you tweet about your hair all day long. I don"t care. Don"t aspire to connect with me. Marketing spammers (and public relations airheads) – delete, delete, delete.

I"m never going to follow you just because you follow me. I don"t need quantity in my Twitter followers. I want quality. I want thinkers. I want crafty locals. I want ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery

I am curious about the future of media and am exploring this by participating in it, by publishing a hyperlocal news sites and involving myself in online communities. I"ve tried to create something new and unique with Fitzroyalty and the ongoing interest in it suggests that people find it useful and entertaining. I find it rewarding to publish my site, and I appreciate all the feedback I receive and all the friends and contacts I have made in the Melbourne social media / citizen journalism scene.

I"m not trying to build a commercial business that has a brand to market and protect, but I do take my reputation seriously. I monitor the net for discussions about my site and respond to ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

the Red Cross Blood Bank ? a case study of repeated customer service failure

Three weeks ago I phoned a contact at the Southbank Red Cross Blood Bank in Melbourne to arrange my work"s regular visit to donate blood. Since starting my current job I have taken over from a colleague in organising our visit. The normal procedure is to call the Southbank centre, book a time and confirm the minivan pickup instructions (in case the regular driver is not available and they send a different driver who is not familiar with the area).

I rang the contact two weeks ago and left a message. It was not returned, so I sent an email the next day. No response. Two weeks went by. I called the main Blood Bank number, explained the situation and asked ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»
