Another month, another election…

This weekend, every local government in Victoria went to the polls to elect local councillors. While most polls were conducted via postal ballots, some had attendance voting.

City of Yarra elections - preliminary results

The results of the City of Yarra elections are still being finalised, but some candidates polled so well they are clear winners. Steve Jolly (Socialist Party) and Amanda Stone (Greens) have been elected in Langridge ward, which is brilliant. Geoff Barbour (ALP) is the third councillor elected.

In Nicholls ward Sam Gaylard (Greens) and Jane Garrett (ALP) have been elected, with final results still to be published. Napier studios retrospective at CCP

On Friday 28 November I went to the CCP for the opening of a retrospective exhibition for the Napier studios, a youth art workshop established in 2004 by the City of Yarra. The exhibition features photos of the artists at work rather than the works themselves (or reproductions of them), and the opening night was really the launch of a high quality booklet documenting the achievements of the studio 2004-2008. The exhibition is on until 13 December so go along and get a copy of the booklet.

One of the great victories of people over government in 2008 was the successful campaign to save Condell park. Socialist Party councillor Steve Jolly led the campaign, which is typical of his pragmatic approach to local government policy. None of the other councillors made much of a fuss about the park. The Labor party clones on council did nothing to contradict the state Labor local MP Dick Wynne, whose office was spreading misinformation about the future of the park.
