Local government food hygiene enforcement: London vs Melbourne

Here"s further evidence that the standards of enforcement, disclosure and transparency regarding food hygiene standards in Victoria are hopelessly inadequate and out of date. In London, local government authorities close down suspect businesses and refuse to allow owners to reopen under different names. They post information on the windows of premises for the public to see. This business was the Saffron cafe (11A Sicilian Avenue, Holborn) and I saw this by coincidence. Why can"t we have this in Melbourne? We could if our inept, obsessed with secrecy, state government developed some political will and forced local governments to take their responsibilities in relation to public health seriously.

at last, Fitzroy is promised a new public toilet

The City of Yarra is clueless when it comes to spending our money. It wastes thousands of dollars to pay business lobby groups and historical societies to build shit websites, but fails to meet its promises to build public toilets.

Instead it comes up with ridiculous plans to outsource the provision of public toilet facilities to private businesses. It"s curious that we have heard nothing further about this. I suspect, as I predicted, that it has been a complete failure....Read Full Article»

a new community garden for Fitzroy?

A year ago I wrote a post about the vacant land on the corner of George and Charles streets. Now the City of Yarra has announced that the site may become a new community garden. As the land is apparently owned by the Department of Human Services, permission from the government will be required. I think it"s a great idea. What do you think?

What:

common sense, discrimination and human rights

We live in an age of rampant hypocrisy. Rich suits in their private old man clubs receive exemptions from anti-discrimination laws and are free to exclude women, but a woman who wants to run a travel business that excludes men from group trips is banned from doing so. Some forms of sexism are apparently better than others.

In the aftermath of the terrible death of Dianne Brimble, cruise ship operators are trying to be more socially responsible and want to end the bogan drug fueled gang bang culture that seems to prevail amongst some of their customers. But when they try to stop schoolies from booking trips because they are a liability due to their stupid drunken ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

I will choose when I die

I demand free access to reliable information about painless, non-violent ways to end my life. I believe that voluntary euthanasia should be legal and access to it should be part of the public health care system. The right to life fascists do not own my body and neither does the state. I demand the right to determine what to do with my body and my life.

Australia is moving very slowly towards socially accepting, and legally condoning, voluntary euthanasia and ethical, consenting assisted suicide. I expect that by the time I reach retirement age, these issues will have been thoroughly examined by our society and ethical "end of life" or "quality of death" solutions will be commonly available....Read Full Article»

Fitzroy history ? being a drug dealer was so much easier in the nineteenth century

Before prohibition and the absurd "war on drugs", importing opium into Australia was routine, at least as long as you paid the correct import duty on your smack. As reported in The Argus, Friday, 3 June 1892, p6, a North Fitzroy resident of Chinese descent called Goon Sang, who worked as a vegetable hawker, was prosecuted in the Fitzroy Police Court for not paying import duty on over 200 pounds (about 100kg) of opium. He got off due to insufficient evidence. It"s not clear who got to keep the stash.

the new North Fitzroy library proposal ? a victory for resident common sense over ALP stupidity

Common sense has finally prevailed in the plan to build a bigger North Fitzroy library. The failures of successive councils over many years to properly address this issue may finally be corrected.

In October 2008 City of Yarra councillor Steve Jolly reported on his blog that:...Read Full Article»
