Men"s fashion shop Urban Native barely lasted 6 months on Smith St. Now the space is occupied by the Social Studio, a non-profit organisation offering education and training to refuges in clothing design, manufacturing and retail.

Fashion retailer Loft on Johnston St has closed. It"s a shame because I occasionally shopped there, but obviously not enough to help them pay the rent!

These photos show the shops in the buildings on the north west corner of Brunswick St and Rose St. At the time they included a chemist and a crockery shop. Now they include recycled clothing and icecream. On Brunswick St the transition of much of Fitzroy from industrial to retail is less evident as it was a major retail strip from the time of its creation. But what would the Victorians think of a shop called Shag?

I'm seriously considering moving to the UK and looking for work there after my recent holiday (I loved it, I felt like I'd finally found home), so I'm doing a bit of preliminary research into the little things that go into a move - like somehow shipping my enormous collection of clothes, shoes, accessories, etc overseas, as that's clearly what matters most. I do plan on cutting down my wardrobe before I move, but I think the bare minimum I'd want to send over is about 100kgs worth. I'm shallow and need the comfort of a large wardrobe, so sue me.

Now I've checked AusPost, DHL, and FedEx rates for shipping 100kgs worth, and prices range from about $1200-$1500...which is probably more than the items are actually worth because I'm an opshopper!...Read Full Article»
