Local government food hygiene enforcement: London vs Melbourne

Here"s further evidence that the standards of enforcement, disclosure and transparency regarding food hygiene standards in Victoria are hopelessly inadequate and out of date. In London, local government authorities close down suspect businesses and refuse to allow owners to reopen under different names. They post information on the windows of premises for the public to see. This business was the Saffron cafe (11A Sicilian Avenue, Holborn) and I saw this by coincidence. Why can"t we have this in Melbourne? We could if our inept, obsessed with secrecy, state government developed some political will and forced local governments to take their responsibilities in relation to public health seriously.

high tide 2100 AD

I"m not sure how recent this high tide 2100 AD stencil on Gore St is, but I was fascinated to see it. There"s another on Flickr from 2005 so it may have been there for years, although it looks quite fresh. According to the very helpful Victorian government land website, the area around Gore St is approximately 26m above sea level. This artwork exaggerates how much the ocean may rise due to climate change, but its message is political rather than literal. For more information about the predicted effects of global warming and rising sea levels see 100 metre line.

my anonymous internet stalker is a coward and a criminal

I am being stalked by someone anonymously on the internet. They regularly post insulting and offensive comments to Fitzroyalty (which I don"t publish). Someone is also writing posts on the anti-Fitzroyalty blog that reference posts from Fitzroyalty in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to annoy me. Although I cannot yet prove it, it is plausible to think that the comments and the posts are written by the same person. There is evidence of a particular voice and style of writing that is common to both.

The anti-Fitzroyalty blog attempts satire but achieves only banal and bitter mimicry. Many of its posts would have no meaning to the general reader, who would not see the connections between the mimicry ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»

stay vigilant on Rose St

Sadly, and somewhat ironically, this statement on Rose St predates the horrible stabbing of a man on the street on the night of 2 January 2010. Read the news stories here, here and here. The story was updated on 17 January and we now know that two people have been arrested. Now it has been revealed that it was a deliberate ambush, not a random attack. I feel safer knowing that, although that does not help the victim.

at last, Fitzroy is promised a new public toilet

The City of Yarra is clueless when it comes to spending our money. It wastes thousands of dollars to pay business lobby groups and historical societies to build shit websites, but fails to meet its promises to build public toilets.

Instead it comes up with ridiculous plans to outsource the provision of public toilet facilities to private businesses. It"s curious that we have heard nothing further about this. I suspect, as I predicted, that it has been a complete failure....Read Full Article»

Excitement, uncertainty, curiosity. Bogans, hipsters, yuppies. Cars, bikes, booze, brazen stupidity. Johnston St late at night is the anticipation of pleasure and the inevitability of suffering.

a new community garden for Fitzroy?

A year ago I wrote a post about the vacant land on the corner of George and Charles streets. Now the City of Yarra has announced that the site may become a new community garden. As the land is apparently owned by the Department of Human Services, permission from the government will be required. I think it"s a great idea. What do you think?

2010 Fitzroy pub calendar available now

For the fourth year in a row, a group of Fitzroy drinkers have put together a calendar of Fitzroy pubs. For the last two years the pubs featured (plus some not featured) have sold the calendar over the bar. Profits from the calendar go to Fitzroy Learning Network. Last year the publishers of the calendar collected and donated $1700. If you need a 2010 calendar, go into a Fitzroy pub and ask for one! You can call Michael on 0408 027 262 for more information. It"s a great local initiative!

Abby Winters and other unethical employers

I have to interrupt my series of summer holiday reviews to discuss some breaking news. The Fitzroy based Abby Winters porn site is in trouble again. The bogan press journalist, who has been pursuing a vendetta against it since 2007, reported yesterday that G Media CEO Garion Hall has been charged with numerous offences including "making objectionable films for gain". For the background to this story read my December 2007 and June 2009 posts.

The charges are the result of investigations following his June arrest. A number of people writing about this issue then analysed the law and came to the conclusion that while it may be legal for Abby Winters to publish its content on the internet ... read the complete post ...Read Full Article»
