First Look gallery, North Fitzroy

north-fitzroy

I missed the news of the opening of the First Look gallery on St George"s Rd in North Fitzroy, and so missed the opening party. When I caught up, I dropped in on a Saturday morning and chatted briefly with owner Bret about the gallery, which features the work of Indigenous artists from the obscure to the famous....Read Full article»

dinner at Tom Phat in Brunswick

brunswick

Prior to the Pinky Beecroft and the White Russians gig at the Brunswick Hotel last month my girlfriend and I had dinner at Tom Phat, somehere we had been meaning to try for some time. Its reputation for quality food at reasonable prices is deserved, and the service was very good. The menu is varied with dishes based on Indian, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese flavours. Even more tempting dishes are listed on the specials board....Read Full article»

Lunch at A1 Bakery

An occasional treat for me is to go to Brunswick on a Saturday to shop at Mediterranean Wholesalers and some of the middle eastern shops further north on Sydney Rd. My favourites are the A1 Bakery (643-645 Sydney Rd), Bahla"s Pastry (761-763 Sydney Rd) and the Phoenician Bakery (774 Sydney Rd)....Read Full article»

agony and ecstasy

junkie1 agony and ecstasy

A laneway off Leicester St behind Nobody jeans typifies Fitzroy street culture. On one wall an often photographed and reproduced work of street art expresses a scream of agony or ecstasy (I can"t tell which), while on the other side two unfinished supermodels observe dispassionately....Read Full article»

dinner at the Rose hotel

roseh1 dinner at the Rose hotel

Apart from Bimbo Deluxe, the Rose hotel is my traditional local. Can someone explain why it is called the Rose hotel when it is one street away from Rose St on the corner of Napier and Leicester streets? Despite its confusing location, the Rose is well known to locals for providing excellent hearty pub meals at bargain prices. On a cold winter evening when you"re lazy and don"t feel inspired to cook, it is the perfect alternative....Read Full article»

Strong attendance at YCAT rally

The YCAT rally on Sunday 27 July 2008 at Smith"s Reserve in Fitzroy was well attended, with about 200 people hearing a variety of speakers provide coherent opinions about what a waste of money building the east-west tunnel would be and how unnecessary it is....Read Full article»

Colts win Minor Premiership

Last Saturday the Colts fought back from 12-7 down, playing in to a strong wind for the second half to win 34-12 against a very strong Northern side. The side played some very exciting, structured rugby and we are the only club to beat Northern this year.

A special note of appreciation to the coaching team of Barry O’Neill (now back in Ireland), Matt Beissel, James Cavanagh, Andrew McPhillips and managers Francois Joubert/Steve Griffin. However, the team recognises there is still a lot of work to do to go one step further this year!...Read Full article»

my pet rock at Pieces of Eight

On Wednesday 25 June 2008 I went to the opening of the My Pet Rock exhibition at the Pieces of Eight jewellery and artist made objects gallery in North Fitzroy. It was crowded and successful opening with some amazing objects (even I liked them!) and gorgeous jewellery that my girlfriend could barely stop herself from buying (she is also a jewellery designer)....Read Full article»

Letter from Paul Webster

Dear MURFC Supporters & Sponsors,

With the "regular" club season for our teams (except Colts) now completed, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our loyal supporters & sponsors for your tremendous support this year. Whilst the Premier sides stopped short of our goals to obtain some silverware in 2008, the club’s on-field performance in its 100th year is still one to remember. We achieved a top four finish in Premier 1 and Premier 2, the first time in 10 years, Premier 3 missed the finals by one point, the Centenary match on the main University Oval was an outstanding success and all sides are playing an attractive style of rugby, with a high level of commitment and enthusiasm....Read Full article»

Ink seafood restaurant

ink1 Ink seafood restaurant

Ink seafood restaurant (single page site only, no menus Update 24 July 2008 - Ink now have a beautiful looking website with menus) is located on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in the southern border of North Fitzroy. Alexandra Parade divides Fitzroy and North Fitzroy and is not the greatest location for a restaurant - several lanes of constant traffic, no other entertainment venues on the same block and little passing foot traffic compared to Brunswick St or St George"s Rd....Read Full article»

the news is the news

The Fitzroy newsagent on Brunswick St has closed its original premises and moved in with Goodfellows. This may be the first obvious sign that the new IGA mini-supermarket has interrupted the business status quo in the area. As I wrote earlier this year, Goodfellows will have to change and improve if it is to survive, and it seems the changes are beginning.
