a drink at Fireflies wine bar, North Fitzroy

I don"t know the history of this impressive building on Nicholson St, North Fitzroy. In recent years it has contained a variety of hospitality businesses. Until mid 2009 it was a Mexican restaurant I never got around to trying. It"s now the Fireflies bar and restaurant, where I had a crisp viognier with a friend recently. She raved about the food, and I"ll be back soon to try it!

coffee at the Corner Store cafe, North Fitzroy

The Corner Store cafe used to be another of my regular haunts years ago. I believe it has had a relatively recent change of ownership, but the coffee is still good. It"s a fine place to sit sipping coffee watching the northroyalty walking past. The gen Yness of the staff was a minor cause for concern however. I ordered my coffee, sat, it was brought to me and I drank it. When I got up and went to the counter to pay I was asked what I wanted. I"d already been forgotten, and it was hardly busy. Hmmm...

Fitzroy history ? from margarine factory to Aboriginal housing board

The photo below shows the chic art deco Birmacley Margarine Works at 127 Scotchmer Street, North Fitzroy, when it opened in 1936. The second photo shows the same building in 1948, and the last photo is of the building today, which now houses the offices of the Aboriginal Housing Board of Victoria.

it?s all about the glue

Rone"s current Rose St wall paste-up has not lasted as well or for as long as his previous work on the same space. I remember reading about the glue paste-up artists use on Drab"s blog, and wonder if Rone"s recipe was not right on this occasion? It"s a shame because this work on Rose St was perhaps the best yet, with each print receiving an additional handpainted element, making each sheet unique and the entire wall more complex and visually appealing.

Blackhearts and Sparrows opens in North Fitzroy

Blackhearts and Sparrows, rather like Bottega Tasca at 321 Lygon Street, Carlton (which specialises in European varieties like tempranillo and sangiovese from Australian and international producers), is my kind of wine shop. It carries many different varieties, so those of us sick of generic shiraz and cabernet sauvignon can find Australian and imported monastrell, barbera and other delights. While the selection at Piedimontes is way above average for a supermarket, if you want something more distinctive Blackhearts and Sparrows on Scotchmer St is the place to go.

beer and pizza at Deco bar, St George?s Rd North Fitzroy

Deco Bar on St George"s Rd is one of my favourite places. After attending the manic RMIT printmaking exhibition at the nearby Red gallery recently, Deco was the prefect place to relax in and recover from the crush of people at the show. Like the arrangement at other bars and food business, such as Joe"s Shoe Store and Pizza Meine Liebe on High St in Northcote, Deco has an arrangement whereby you can order pizza from Red Olive next door and enjoy it in the bar with the splendid variety of drinks they serve. I discovered Austria"s Gösser dark beer at Deco soon after moving to Melbourne, and it"s always a pleasure to return.

What:

woah look out!

The broken window at John Citizen remained unrepaired more than a week after the damage occurred and, from these notes in the window seen on 20 December, it may remain this way for some time. Take care.

goodbye Happy Kappa, hello Yong

Sadly the cute little Japanese noodle shop Happy Kappa on Brunswick St has closed. I liked it but its location in the unloved northern section of Brunswick St is difficult for a food business to succeed in – it does not get a lot of passing traffic in the evening compared to a few blocks further south. Its replacement is the green / vegetarian / vegan / organic / raw Yong, which will open soon.

new restaurant for North Fitzroy

The vacant space formerly occupied by the green grocer on St George"s Rd near the Deco bar and Red Olive restaurant is soon to be filled by a new restaurant. The word on the street is that several chefs, recently departed from other high profile Melbourne restaurants, have come together to open this space. It will be interesting to see what niche it fills – I"m guessing something slightly more upmarket than what is around it, but perhaps not quite as slick as St Jude"s Cellars or Cutler and Co. Watch this space.

citizen under attack

The charming shop John Citizen on Brunswick St, North Fitzroy had its window smashed last Friday night and on Saturday afternoon the footpath was still littered with broken glass. The owners had marked the area with tape and posted a warning note to protect people. It must be heartbreaking to wake up to this, and to have to deal with the inconvenience, loss of trade and cost of repairs. I hate bogan vandals...
