Prior to the Pinky Beecroft and the White Russians gig at the Brunswick Hotel last month my girlfriend and I had dinner at Tom Phat, somehere we had been meaning to try for some time. Apart from Bimbo Deluxe, the Rose hotel is my traditional local. Can someone explain why it is called the Rose hotel when it is one street away from Rose St on the corner of Napier and Leicester streets? Despite its confusing location, the Rose is well known to locals for providing excellent hearty pub meals at bargain prices. Last Saturday the Colts fought back from 12-7 down, playing in to a strong wind for the second half to win 34-12 against a very strong Northern side. The side played some very exciting, structured rugby and we are the only club to beat Northern this year.

A special note of appreciation to the coaching team of Barry O’Neill (now back in Ireland), Matt Beissel, James Cavanagh, Andrew McPhillips and managers Francois Joubert/Steve Griffin. On Wednesday 25 June 2008 I went to the opening of the My Pet Rock exhibition at the Pieces of Eight jewellery and artist made objects gallery in North Fitzroy. Whilst the Premier sides stopped short of our goals to obtain some silverware in 2008, the club’s on-field performance in its 100th year is still one to remember. Ink seafood restaurant (single page site only, no menus Update 24 July 2008 - Ink now have a beautiful looking website with menus) is located on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in the southern border of North Fitzroy. Alexandra Parade divides Fitzroy and North Fitzroy and is not the greatest location for a restaurant - several lanes of constant traffic, no other entertainment venues on the same block and little passing foot traffic compared to Brunswick St or St George"s Rd....Read Full article»

In the curtain raiser MURFC played Old Xavier for the 10th Shaw Cup. In a close game former MURFC players proved the difference as Wilson Tighe and Peter Shaw both scored two tries. Final score 25-12.

The Fitzroy newsagent on Brunswick St has closed its original premises and moved in with Goodfellows. This may be the first obvious sign that the new IGA mini-supermarket has interrupted the business status quo in the area. As I wrote earlier this year, Goodfellows will have to change and improve if it is to survive, and it seems the changes are beginning.
