Crows snare fourth with Bulldogs win

Adelaide claimed fourth spot on the AFL ladder and look to have guaranteed themselves the double-chance with a gutsy 10.16 (76) to 9.13 (67) win over the Bulldogs in Saturday evening's round 22 encounter at Football Park.

Black/UV Lights

I'm thinking it would be kind of cool to have a couple of black/UV lights in my new house... anyone know where I can pick some up from? Do they fit into regular light fittings? Somewhere near Thornbury, city or Footscray would be best. Any idea how much they cost?

Books, books, books

Apologies for making a selling post. Most of these will probably end up being packed off to second-hand dealerships, but I figure I might as well see here if anybody is interested first. Cheap, because I can't remember in most cases what I payed for them originally, but all in very good condition and some unread. Pick up can be in the city, Footscray or Yarraville... or anywhere between Yarraville and the city, really. Any time of day, any day but Sunday, but it can depend as I'm in casual work.

Familiar Skyline from the Air

Since everyone is posting skyline photos, I thought I would as well.

I was lucky enough this week to be treated to a ride in a two-seater plane trip over the city. Here's what we look like from the air (roughly southwest):...Read Full article»

History of Coode Island

Coode Island, an almost uninhabited industrial area, is 4 km. west of Melbourne. It was formed in 1886 when canal was cut through the Sandridge swamp to provide a straightened stream for the Yarra River. The boundaries were the canal on the south, the Maribyrnong River on the west and the Yarra meander on the north and east. Its area was 97 ha. It was named after Sir John Coode, an English harbour engineer who was engaged by the Melbourne Harbor Trust to select the optimum route for the canal as part of the Port of Melbourne.

Coode chose the canal route so as to avoid dangerous tidal ebbs and inflows that would occur along one that went straight from the Yarra River docks to Hobsons Bay. Inflows endangered flood-prone land upstream as far as Gardiners Creek, by the banking up of stream waters. The route also ensured that the Yarra waters would discharge into the river mouth, scouring the bay and reducing silt deposition. ...Read Full article»

The Amazing Human Body Exhibition

anatomyphoto.jpg

Last year, while flipping through the channels I stumbled upon Anatomy for Beginners, the show where Dr. Gunther von Hagen disects cadaveurs. Almost a year later, I have watched a few more episodes of the show and have learned a bit about plastination, the process of making you into a workable cadaver. Am I ready to go to the next level?...Read Full article»

Ice Skating in Docklands

iceskating.png

I always seem to realize there is ice skating in the city after the fact but not this year. Starting from this Saturday is the Docklands Winter Wonderland. It features a snow dome where there are a multitude of wintry themed activities inside. The main event at the Winter Wonderland is its ice skating, particularly the night skating which features a DJ playing dance and disco music. It's only here for 2 weeks, so book now....Read Full article»

Petes Google maps AJAX tutorial

The fundamental philosophy of AJAX is to load the static parts of your webpage only once, and request a small amount of information about the bits that change from a server. This makes changing the displayed data much faster.

I have access toPHP on this webserver but I will not dwell on the server side workings, that is up to you! In your application you could use a PHP, PERL, ASP, or any server side language to respond to a query based on user input or map position. ...Read Full article»
